East Three School

Location: Inuvik, NT

Date Completed: 2012

The new East Three Schools is an 11,860m2, two storey school facility that combines an Elementary and High School joined together by a double gymnasium and set in a newly landscaped site containing walkways, seating areas, playgrounds, gathering areas as well as newly planted trees and shrubs. The creation of large gathering areas and smaller break-out areas adjacent to classrooms, in combination with an interior glazing strategy, allows teachers to expand the learning environment outside of the traditional classroom walls.

A common theme was established through consultation with various community stakeholders, which developed into an approach to the incorporation of cultural imagery in and around the school. Found logs were used to create playground equipment, regional animal and marine life imagery was incorporated into wall and floor surfaces and northern games imagery was incorporated into the gymnasium wall surfaces. Site landscaping, views to the exterior, natural lighting, and the cultural imagery of land, sea, and animal life were incorporated within the school fabric to create an educational environment that is specifically representative of the Inuvik region.
