Łutsel Kʼe Dene School Renovation & Addition

Łutsel Kʼe, Northwest Territories

Completed in 2018

The Lutsel K’e Dene School required a full interior renovation and envelope upgrade to bring the building up to modern educational and technical standards.

TAG reorganized the K-12 school into three “neighbourhoods” to create separate zones for the different age groups: primary school, middle school and high school. The central corridor was expanded in order to create break-out zones to be used by students for informal gatherings and group work. Glazing between the classrooms and the corridor provides passive supervision to these areas and allows additional natural light to filter into the classrooms. The gymnasium was opened up to the rest of the school with a large glass viewing wall, and a central library with movable lounge furniture was designed for both school and community use.

The project also included an extensive landscaping component which provided the school with native plant beds, three exterior playground zones, a tipi platform, and a ceremonial fire feeding circle for cultural events, constructed from locally sourced stone pavers.
