Date Completed: October 2018

This project involved carrying out a design and feasibility/costing study for the extensive renovation (including additions) of the existing 2738m2 school in Tuktoyaktuk, NT. The main programming objectives were to accommodate K-12 students, a new full-sized gym, new stand-alone CTS shop, consideration for addition of future daycare, a dedicated high school area, seminar rooms and larger library and community gathering areas. Schematic design alternatives were developed, along with class D and C (and B in the DD phase) cost estimates, to explore various options for how to incorporate the large new gym and future daycare additions, as well as approach to interior renovations. The selected design focused on creating a strong connection to the exterior/playground area and opening up the plan to create a more welcoming, flexible and vibrant quality to the school. Key aspects of this approach were: bringing in of ample natural light, providing views to the outdoors; integrating in flexible-use break out areas and repurposing the existing gym space as a vibrant community-use area (also used by the school).
